working on a BIG project

Hi everyone…..

Sorry it’s been a while. My life has been crazy as usual but then I jumped on the super crazy train! I talked my husband into doing what I thought would be a “little project” but turned into a BIG project. Let’s just say in involved a trip to Ikea Sacramento, putting together 6 pieces of Ikea furniture, painting the furniture and the walls, then trimming out the furniture all since Saturday morning. I can thankfully say I am not divorced as of tonight but I can say I wouldn’t blame him. This morning my whole body hurt so bad I wanted to divorce myself! Pictures and a BIG post are coming soon but tonight I am going to drag myself upstairs, into a hot bath then into my nice soft bed. Which reminds my the sheets are in the dryer so I better go make it first. What were you up to this weekend??? I hope something relaxing so I can be jealous.

I never promised you an herb garden…

Hi Y’all (sometimes I like to pretend I am from the south)

I hope you had some amazing weather this weekend like we did here in Napa Valley! My weekend was busy, but very rewarding. I helped at Ky’s school Gala, it was awesome and very successful. Today, I worked this morning on one of my favorite clients who now lives in San Francisco. She went from being long and brunette to being a beautiful blonde ( sorry I am a little prejudiced) with shoulder length hair.  Then I came home and painted 4 projects and a few other things. I will have a lot to share this week! The front porch is getting a spring/summer makeover and here is a little preview.

Teal/Lime green and cream planter

I re-purposed 2 of out old terracotta pots and painted them with some spray paint and used lots of blue painters tape for the stripes. Well speaking of re-purposed now onto the feature presentation.

Our fun and sweet neighbors invited  us over for dinner the other night and I caught one glimpse of the new edition to their backyard and fell in LOVE!!! Seriously I wanted to steal it kinda love. It was an herb garden, but not just any herb garden. Les had re-purposed old barn wood and fence boards to create this masterpiece.

Isn’t so cool! Rustic but cool!

It is right outside their kitchen door, a perfect place for easy harvesting while cooking. He promises me it is easy to make…. and he will make me one so that is why I am singing “you never promised me a rose herb garden” but he did. This story is to be continued when I have pics of my new Herb Garden.

Have a happy Monday, and you will be hearing more from me soon!

The Twin Tables

I have been working on these two side table/ nightstands for about a week. I purchased them at a local Goodwill store. I loved the clean lines, dove tailed drawers and sturdy build. I also happened to love they were built in Australia

.

I was lucky because “love” was very inexpensive at The Goodwill Store this day! So I decided to bring them home. I painted them with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White that I purchased from one of my favorite stores Roost. With help from Kaylee I painted and sanded them. After that, I waxed them with clear and dark wax to a beautiful sheen. I added beautiful glass prism pulls with an antique accent piece from another find.

We had a fun little family get together for Sis’s birthday on Sunday. So in honor of Kaylee and our love for Pintrest we decided to bake a cake. Not just any cake, but a beautiful ombre cake we spied on Pintrest. Our inspiration was this cake.

It was a great day and really fun to have girls back in the house.

Are you obsessed with Pintrest too? Do you love all things ombre from hair to decor? Has anyone else started searching Pintrest and found themselves at 1:00 a.m. having lost all track of time or is it just me? I just can’t get enough!

Spring is in the …..house

Hi Everyone

I have taken a couple of weeks off of blogging because my life has been CRAZY   a little busy. I have wanted to sit down at one point almost every day but time would disappear. Do you know what I am talking about? Even at almost 20 (sis is a birthday girl on Friday the big 2-0) 18 and 13 the kids still keep me hopping.

Speaking of hopping it is almost Easter. I have had some spring decor up for a while and have slowly been adding to it. So even though outside is gray and rainy I have a little sunshine in my house.

Spring on the buffet

Trader Joe’s had these perky Daffodils for $1.29 for a bunch of 10, you can’t say no to adding a little color to your house or work at that price. This bunny, my Mom gave to me and I absolutely LOVE it. I love the color, the texture and the sweet little bunny face.

Even Mr. Old Window got into the act with a Moss letter D, a craft I made last year inspired by the Pottery Barn initials here. I added some egg ornaments, Chenille chicks and a “Spring” banner I made with paper and embellishments from My Minds Eye.

My vignette on the wine refrigerator made with an silver chalkboard tray, some dollar bin Target Easter eggs, grass and chevron paper basket. The Egg topiary I had from last year.

So wherever Spring has found you I hope you are enjoying all of the beautiful colors, even if it has to be inside for now!

Short and Sweet (not me the post silly)

Good Morning

Sorry for the play on words but I couldn’t resist.

I just wanted to share a couple of quick budget buys that I have made and want to share because they are inexpensive but great products.

The first is from Target( Tarjeey)

RE Towels from Target $4.99

Room Essentials® Fast Dry Towel

These bath towels I bought as a quick attempt to inexpensively dress up my bathroom before company was coming over. At only $4.99 each for white towels just to hang and look pretty I thought to myself what the heck. They looked nice hanging in the bathroom until one of my teenage boys used the “for looks only towel” as a real one. So off to the washer and dryer it went. I thought to myself the perfection would be gone, but oh no I was completely wrong. It turned into this amazing soft fluffy towel. It absorbs water is super soft and dries out quickly. Plus usually once a month Target puts them on sale for $4. I am slowly getting rid of my old “wedding gift towels” and completing a set of white fluffy towels. They have lasted in the same condition for almost a year now. Why spend more on towels especially with teenage boys around???????

My second favorite inexpensive product right now is a beauty product. I don’t know about you but I think I have tried almost every mascara out there from $30-$6.99. Never finding complete perfection. But by golly I think I have found it. I am completely smitten I must say, every morning when I put in on little hearts flutter above my head as my lashes go from barely anything to long and pretty.

Falsies by Maybeline

Walmart sells it for $5.94 and I had a $1.00 off coupon. Take that Dior. When was the last time you spent $4.94 on a mascara and fell in love?

Have a great day! The sun is shining here in Napa Valley.

Life as a working winecountrymama

Hi Everyone

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. I have been working hard on my PT and getting back to work at my day job as a hairstylist. I feel so much stronger and am loving working without the chronic shoulder pain. While it is so amazing seeing my clients and doing something that I love to do everyday again, I have to say it has been a challenge for me. I feel like my head is spinning all the time. I think I got used to being alone all day and now trying to still keep up the house, groceries, work, paperwork etc. is so much harder. I know it will get easier each day I am very thankful for that.  When I was reading one of my favorite blogs Centsationalgirl and saw her quote today it made me feel so much better!

Image

I put it immediately up as my screen saver. I need to remember this.

I am working on some DIY projects to share in the upcoming week, but first I am working on something else for you…….

My husband and I started a class called Financial Peace University it is a program developed by Dave Ramsey. It is a great program! We have been working on our budget, looking where we are and are not spending our money etc. So because my brain isn’t swimming enough already, I am trying to come up with ways to spend time with friends and family while maintaining  our (low for now) entertaining budget. I am excited to say my next post will be all the ideas that I have come up with, or if you have any ideas leave me a comment. I also want to include some other money saving tips so please share!

Project Valentine

It is almost the end of the weekend waaahhh. But I really don’t have too much to whine about because I am officially going back to work (as a hairstylist) tomorrow. It’s been over 4 months and to be perfectly honest I can’t tell you what was worse the physical pain from the shoulder surgery or the emotional pain of being housebound with no income. I have worked since I was 13 and I didn’t realize how much value I put on being able to work. There were plus sides too! I started my blog, something I have wanted to do for over a year. I was able to bake Christmas cookies with my kids and their friends since I wasn’t the crazy overbooked hairstylist they have always known in December. I enjoyed time with Kaylee while she was home for the Holidays. So yes my reality changed a lot but it has as much good as it did bad. I can’t wait to see all my clients and catch up on what they have been up to.

Well enough about me, honestly this was supposed to be all about my Christmas Valentine’s project I have been working on and I am soooo excited to share! This project started in my mind in November and they were going to be Christmas presents. I was visiting one of my favorite blogs Shanty 2 Chic and saw Whitney’s Joy Plaques
I fell in love and thought “hey I could do that”. I ordered the supplies online because a) we don’t have a Hobby Lobby and b) most of our Michaels stores don’t carry a lot but, as Christmas shipping goes I didn’t receive everything until 2 days before Christmas. Since then all the materials have been sitting in my craft cabinet until I had a brainstorm, why not adapt them for Valentine’s day decor. I am very happy with the outcome.

Here is what I started out with:

supplies for Valentine's plaques

Ignore the rock in the background, I didn’t use it. I did how ever use 3 pieces of wood cut from a 2×4, my sweet husband cut them and slightly rounded the corners for me. I used 3 wooden candle sticks 2 shorter and 1 taller. 3 finials and Gorilla Epoxy glue, not gorilla wood glue, it foams up, attaching them all with the epoxy and let them dry for about 30 minutes. Hindsight I think I would paint the pieces individually and then glue them.

unpainted plaque

After the Epoxy dried I spray painted them with Rustoleum Colonial Red. 2 coats

Plaque spray painted with Rustoleum Colonial Red

I then cut out some burlap into rectangles a little smaller than the plaque area, created stencils with my Cricut, using thick card stock so it could be used  as a stencil.

cutout burlap

I was a bad blogger and didn’t take any pictures of me stenciling but I used a Martha Stewart pouncer sponge, black craft paint and then stenciled on a piece of the cut burlap. I used spray adhesive on the back of the burlap and attached it to the painted plaque. To add a decorative touch I used fancy furniture tacks on all 4 corners. Here is the finished project. Do you Lurve them as much as I do???

I Love You Plaques

I Love You Plaque Closeup

I can’t wait to share a few more projects, my Valentine’s mantle, Mister old window dressed up for Valentines Day and a new chalkboard paint project. Sometimes it’s hard to sleep with all of these ideas swimming around in my brain. Do you ever have that problem???

Can I get a New Years Day do over?

Well so much for the start of 2012 being a healthy year. I spent the first part of 2012 in the ER with a kidney infection. It was very painful but they took really good care of me at The Queen. So I want a do-over. Maybe if I rest, take care of myself I could pretend next Saturday night is New Years Eve and start the “New” New Year off right.
I will let you know if it works! Until then lots of fluids and rest are in my future.
I am looking forward to this afternoon though my sweet friend Brandy is coming over and we are going to make our Christmas Thank You Cards. (I will be sitting so that is resting right?)  I can’t wait to share!
